All About Elik

Background

Where was your character born?
Elik was born in the gnomish town of Tinkersmithquick, near the base of the southern Astoro mountains, while his parents were there doing collaborative research with some gnomish inventors.

Who raised him?
Elik was raised by his parents, and the gnomes of Tinkersmithquick, for roughly even amounts of time. His parents were very busy, so, he mostly socialized with the gnomes. This is rather evident in his quirky and eccentric personality.

What was happening in the region when your character was growing up?
Elik's mother and father were working on a top secret program with a team of elite gnomish inventors. Elik didn't understand matters of secrecy or politics at the time, but he would constantly overhear mention of the Ravannese to the south, war and strategy, and some sort of dark alliance that was posing a big problem for the Kingdom of Sartii. Apparently, the Guild of Sartii Magi had sent his parents to work with the gnomes on some sort of solution…

Does your character have any relatives?
His parents are both still alive, though quite old at this point in time (after all, Elik himself is already in his 55th year!) They reside in the Guildtower of the Sartii Magi. His 1st wife, now an ex, is still alive and off remarried to some merchant schmuck (according to Elik) in the twin cities of Aestra & Faestra. His 2nd wife passed away 3 years ago.

Motivation

What are your character’s immediate goals? What would he like to do in the coming year?
Elik didn't really take to wizardry until his 2nd wife's passing, despite his parents' insistance during his youth. Now, he seeks to gain real field experience, and increase his arcane knowledge. He's a scholar first and foremost, though he's more interested in planar things and beings than most other arcane matters. He's also interested in acquiring rare spell components and items for study, or other things he can bring back to the Guild of Sartii magi as trophies to increase his standing.

What are his long-term goals?
To prove his worth, and the validity of his arcane theorems, after a life of ridicule and 2nd class treatment among his colleagues. Also, to resolve his inner conflicts with his gnomish upbringing, and the impact that had on his social skills. To speak with the man on the moon, court the lady of the lake, and go with the wind until he's gone.

What type of person would be his ideal mate?
A scholarly woman who can speak in tangents for 8 or more hours before realizing she hasn't eaten in a day, and neither has he… and then continues the conversation just a little longer.

Who is his patron deity? Is he a devout worshiper?
Like many of the Guild of Sartii Magi, Elik pays respects to Boccob, though he's not extremely devout. He also pays respect to Wee Jas from time to time, and recently has taken an interest in Obad-Hai while studying the languages of elemental beings.

Is he a devout member of any nonreligious cause?
While not exactly "devout", Elik is an Initiate of the Guild of Sartii Magi. This is mostly due to his parents' legacy, as he is only barely tolerated and typically ridiculed by other members of the guild for his idiosyncrasies, and his rather novice skills for a 55 year old wizard. Elik was a mundane scholar for most of his life, and did not rigorously pursue magic until after his 2nd wife passed away.

Is there any race, creed, alignment, religion or the like against which he is strongly prejudiced?
Elik would have a default unfriendly attitude towards the Ravannese military, or their direct agents, due to his upbringing and social conditioning. He might even default to hostile towards members of the Guild Of The Baleful Night, having heard many nasty stories from his parents. Elik would be unfriendly or hostile towards underdark races by extension.

What is his greatest fear?
Dying before perfecting his research, and saving his good name. He wants his parents and colleagues to respect him.

What is the one task he absolutely refuses to do?
Meddle in matters of Necromancy. Besides his aversion to casting such spells, Elik would go out of his way to destroy necromantic tomes or lore, items, artifacts, and so forth, lest they should fall into the wrong hands. He will refuse to touch or transport such things unless it's directly to their destruction.

Elik is also annoyed when his friends don't take enough time out of their day to read, or discuss philosophy or astrology.
